Founded in 1998 as a sports-based youth development after-school program, Urban Dove opened its first transfer high school, UD Team Brooklyn, in 2012 and its second school, UD Team II Bronx, in 2018. Within its transfer schools, Urban Dove educates and empowers under-credited high school students through an extended day model, featuring sports-based youth development, restorative practices, college prep and workforce development. Teams of 20 students progress through classes and activities together - led by a full-time youth development coach, who works with students throughout the school day and provides social-emotional developmental supports. The coach and team remain together throughout the students’ time at Urban Dove. This powerful model reinforces Urban Dove’s culture of acceptance and high expectations that increases confidence and self-esteem, so that youth participants can transform their lives and become agents of change for their families and their communities.
